Out & About

Places of interest

To the north is the historic cliffside village of Clovelly (approximately 10 miles along the coast) en route to Bideford/Barnstaple (approx ½ hour drive to the north) and Bodmin/Camelford ½ hour on the way southwards towards the Eden Project at St Austell, just over an hour's drive away.

Bude itself is approx 5-10 minutes away by car and has a major Morrisons supermarket on the outskirts. It is open until 9pm in the summer months and has a petrol station, dry cleaning and a café on site. Sandymouth Bay (National Trust car park) also affords a good base for accessing the South West Coastal Path.

Local Activities

Surfing is enjoyed at most of the Bude beaches of Widemouth, Summerleaze, Crooklets and Sandymouth Bay. Locally based tuition can be arranged for watersports in addition to other activities such as horse riding and archery.

For surfing activities try the Big Blue Surf School or Sandymouth Surf School.

Retail therapy is not only available locally in Bude but slightly further afield (30 minutes' drive) at the factory/designer outlet complex of Atlantic Village.

Places to eat

Bude has a number of good restaurants in addition to the numerous pubs and hotels in the area. Wothy of note are Scrummies, Life's a Beach, Hawkers (at the Camelot Hotel) and the St Georges Grill at the Brendon Arms. Padstow and the award winning Rick Stein restaurants are a bit further south.

Day trips

The Trust owned Lundy Island can be accessed by ferry from Bideford as well as fishing trips from Clovelly Harbour. Cycling on The Camel trail and inland watersports at the Tamar Lakes (5-6 miles) are worthy of visits.
